Case Studies from An Expert’s Perspective
The ChIL is a safety instruction facility to develop safe lab practices and hands-on hazard analysis experience in undergraduate students.
Hazard Analysis Techniques
Students are taught three major safety analysis techniques (What-If, HAZOP, FMEA) in the senior course ”Professional Practice of Safety in Chemical Engineering Design” (ChBE 4959). In Lab II, students apply these safety analysis techniques to four lab-scale modules containing multiple unit operations.
An Expert’s Perspective
With over 35 years combined experience in chemical engineering design, as well as expertise in litigation of poor design, the instructor of ChBE 4959 gives the students a unique perspective on the importance of safety for chemical engineers.
